News: Rivas Achieves 1st Coaching Win, Women's Soccer Beats WVC, 1-0
The Pasadena City College women's soccer team handed new head coach Reggie Rivas his first collegiate victory in defeating West Valley College, 1-0, to close out the Ventura Showcase Tournament Saturday.
The Lancers improved to 1-1 and scored their first goal of the 2013 season after being blanked for 145 minutes. In the 56th minute, sophomore defender Amanda Papac gained possession following a West Valley goal punt, then dribbled past two defenders before firing in a 20-yard shot over the outstretched right hand of Vikings' goalie Arezu Amirkial. The goal stood up as PCC celebrated Rivas victory No. 1 as head coach.
"We really dominated the play in the first half, but we didn't get shots on goal," Rivas said. "Amanda just made a terrific individual play to get us on the board. We were in control despite the close score. Now our team knows we can bounce right back after a loss."
Rivas again cited the strong play defensively of both Papac and freshman defender Bailey Shaw. The coach said his midfielders made key contributions, including sophomores Kaylin Edwards, Isabella Montano, and Cassandra Orozco.
Goalie Tatiana Sanchez only had to make two saves in recording the shutout. PCC limited West Valley to just three shots (Lancers shot seven) all contest.
On Friday, Sept. 6, the Lancers will make their home debut in a 5 p.m. non-conference game v. Moorpark College at Robinson Stadium.
