News: Scoring Still An Issue For Women's Soccer, Ties ELAC, 1-1
For the second game in a row, the Pasadena City College women’s soccer team had plenty of scoring opportunities but could only muster a single goal. The Lancers ended up having to rally for a 1-1 draw against East Los Angeles College in a South Coast Conference game Tuesday at Robinson Stadium.
Freshman Lancer forward Helena Macintosh scored PCC’s goal in the 58th minute off a throw-in from Cassandra Orozco which she then launched into the air from the 25-yard line. The ball took a big bounce over the goalie’s head and into the net.
ELAC (6-7-3, 3-3-3) was outshot, 9-4, in the first half but got on the board first when freshman Gladis Reyes ran the ball down the left sideline and shot a low roller into the right corner of the net in the 30th minute. Besides that goal, Lancers goalie Angie Ulmer kept East LA at bay with five saves.
The Lancers (5-5-5, 3-3-3) picked it up in the second half though, moving the ball better and taking advantage of better shot opportunities while ELAC began to put the pressure on late. PCC ended up outshooting the Huskies, 19-9.
In the 60th minute, Amanda Papac just missed giving her team the lead when the defense collapsed on her in the middle of the 6-yard box in front of the goal. Papac drove a close-range shot , but the ball soared wide.
“The team played really well in the second half,” Lancers head coach Reggie Rivas said. “I’m really proud of our efforts. We’re a team that has to work hard for our goals because they are not easy to come by. Now, we’re preparing our game plan for Long Beach.”
The Lancers have scored one goal or less in 12 of their 15 matches this season with a record of 2-5-3 in those games. PCC is 3-0 when it has scored three goals, a mark it has not been able to surpass this year.
PCC will head to Long Beach City College for a 4 p.m. match on Friday to take on the Vikings, who currently place second in the South Coast Conference.
