Pasadena City College, Home of the PCC Lancers

News: Softball Lets SCC Opener Slip Away v. ELAC, 7-6

The Pasadena City College softball team couldn't have come closer to winning its South Coast Conference opener Tuesday at East Los Angeles College. The Lancers were one out away from clinching what would have been a 6-5 victory. Instead, an error by shortstop Allison Lacey on a fielder's choice throw to third allowed the Huskies to it.

The next hitter, Megan Coronado, roped a walk-off RBI single to right-center that rallied ELAC to a 7-6 win over the Lancers. It was the Huskies first victory of 2013, now at 1-4 overall. The Lancers had their record evened at 6-6.

The Lancers jumped out to a 4-0 first-inning lead highlighted by a 2-RBI single by Lacey and a RBI double by starting pitcher Melissa Izumida.

The Huskies would score single runs in each of the first five innings to claw back into the game, tying it 5-5. In the top of the sixth, PCC regained the lead, 6-5, on second baseman Audrey Serna's run-scoring hit through the left side.

PCC relief pitcher Cierra Newton was the hard-luck losing pitcher (3-4) as she allowed only one earned run on five hits in three innings. Izumida and first baseman Sara Quintero (pictured) each had two hits while centerfielder Ashley Shaneberger was 1-for-3 with three runs scored.

ELAC reliever Evangelina Montes turned the tide for her team by coming into end the first inning and pitching 6-1/3 innings overall, allowing just four hits and two unearned runs.

The Lancers put their perfect home record on the line Thursday, Feb. 14 when they face El Camino College-Compton Center in a 2 p.m. first pitch at Robinson Park. PCC is 5-0 at home this year, having outscored its opponents at the off-campus facility by a 34-1 count.
