Pasadena City College, Home of the PCC Lancers

News: Softball Sweeps Season Series v. Compton

For the third time in 2013, the Pasadena City College softball team mercied El Camino College-Compton Center, 9-1, Thursday in a South Coast Conference game at Robinson Park. The Lancers outscored the last-place Tartars, 33-4, in their three encounters.

The Lancers improved to 14-19 overall and 6-10 in SCC play. Compton dropped to 3-23 and 1-15. PCC won for the ninth time this season by the 8-run mercy rule and upped its successful home record to 9-5. Six of those victories were shortened contests due to the Lancers' explosive offense.

The infield trio of shortstop Katelyn Thordarson, third baseman Audrey Serna, and first baseman Natalie Ficocelli continued their hot hitting. Thordarson raised her conference-only batting average to .451 by going 3-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and a stolen base. Serna and Ficocelli (including a double) each batted 2-for-3 with two RBI. The trio all have better than .500 slugging percentages overall while Thordarson's .390 average and Serna's .382 mark top the squad. Ficocelli is 4-for-6 in the last two games with a home run and two doubles to raise her overall batting average to .333.

Centerfielder Jazmin Hernandez (.330 overall average) went 2-for-4 with a shot ground-rule double to deep right. Serna's RBI single to left in the first inning gave the Lancers a 2-1 lead.

Starting pitcher Cierra Newton was the beneficiary of the offensive attack as she scattered five hits and walked one to win her seventh game. Compton shortstop Katelyn Meredith hit a RBI double in the first inning for the Tartars' lone run.

The Lancers return to action next Tuesday, April 9, in a 3 p.m. SCC game at Cerritos College.
