Pasadena City College, Home of the PCC Lancers

News: Softball Bats Silenced By Citrus

Citrus College pitchers Arianna Sanchez and Miranda Gil limited the Pasadena City College softball team to one hit Tuesday as the Owls blanked the Lancers, 8-0, in a non-conference game at Robinson Park.

The Lancers (2-4 overall) picked up their lone hit on a single up the middle by second baseman Audrey Serna with two outs in the fourth inning. Meanwhile, Citrus, playing in its season opener, slugged back-to-back home runs by lefty hitter Sara Moore and Gil in the fifth.

The only other hard hit ball by PCC was earlier in the game when rightfielder Vanessa Cortez pulled a monster drive that went foul of the left-field pole by only a few feet.

Through six games, catcher Allison Lacey leads the team in batting with a .500 average (7-for-14).

The Lancers finished 2-2 at the College of the Desert Best on Grass Tournament held at Civic Center Park in Palm Desert on February 1.

In a 10-1 win over Barstow that ended after six innings, Alissa Barcena threw four innings of 4-hit, 1-run ball for the pitching win while Cortez batted 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI to lead a 12-hit Lancers attack. Reserve leftfielder Viviana Ordaz was 2-for-2 with two RBI and Lacey went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Second baseman Samantha Duran added a double. Jennifer Pegg threw two no-hit innings to record the save.

PCC then held leads of 1-0, 4-3, and 8-6 but got edged by Grossmont, 9-8. The Griffins broke an 8-8 tie and scored in the bottom of the seventh after a double and PCC throwing error for their winning run.

In the loss, first baseman Sara Quintero went 2-for-3 and slugged the first home run of the season for PCC over the left field fence. Pegg was 3-for-4 with a double as was Lacey, who drove in two RBI. Cortez was 2-for-4 and Ordaz ripped a 2-run double.

"We played well in three of the four games out there," PCC head coach Monica Tantlinger said. "It was important to see contributions on offense by Ordaz and Pegg, who can be a big stick for us. Now we have some more options in our lineup."
