News: Three More PCC Women's Swim Records For Frederick At Mt. SAC Invitational
It's taken Emily Frederick just two meets to make the Pasadena City College sports information office want to simply toss out the "updated" Lancers women's swim record list. The freshman Frederick added to her two records from her collegiate debut by winning three events and setting three brand new PCC school records at the Mt. San Antonio Mt. SAC Invitational held Feb. 22-23.
Frederick won the 100-yard freestyle in a record-setting 53.90 seconds, breaking the mark set two years ago by Julia Warden (54.31). She shattered another Warden record in capturing first place in the 100-backstroke at 1:01.93, beating the old mark of 1:02.49. Finally, Frederick picked up her third record of the meet in winning the 200 individual medley, smashing a 10-year-old record set by Amy Williamson by nearly five seconds at 2:12.44. Williamson swam the old standard of 2:17.25 in 2003.
Frederick already had the PCC records in the 50-backstroke (29:16) and 100 IM (1:01.23) that she set at the SCC Pentathlon a week earlier (Feb. 15).
If that wasn't enough, Frederick nearly picked up record No. 6, but her second place finish of 1:00.13 in the 100-butterfly was just 0.11 of a second off the PCC mark set by Malia Garcia in 2008. The versatile Fredericks was fourth in the 200 freestyle, but her 2:01.94 time was a momentary breather that didn't approach a school record.
Paige Watroba, a sophomore, swam a personal best in placing sixth in the 100-butterfly at 1:04.67. Freshman Arolyn Basham overcame the flu to take fifth in that event at 1:03.33. Basham was third overall in the 50-breaststroke at 33.13.
The PCC women's team placed 10th out of 20 teams at the invite despite only three swimmers participating.
Stephen To, the defending CCCAA state champion in the 200-yard butterfly, scored a victory in that event at 2:00.63 to highlight the PCC men's team swims at the Mt. SAC Invitational.
To was touched out at the wire in the 100-butterfly by Mt. SAC's Bennett Yuan (52.73) and settled for second place (52.80).
Michael Chiodo placed sixth in the 200-backstroke (2:08.39) and was eighth in the 100-backstroke (57.50). The Lancers placed 12th as a team.
Both Lancers teams will be action as they start the South Coast Conference dual meet season Friday, March 1 in hosting Mt. San Antonio and Chaffey Colleges. The double dual meet begins at 12:30 p.m. at the PCC Aquatic Center.
