News: Men's Swimming Sees Improvement, 1-1 At Home Double Dual
Stephen To, Michael Chiodo and diver Chris Anderson all picked up event wins as the Pasadena City College men's swim team recorded its first win of the South Coast Conference season, splitting a double dual v. Rio Hondo and Long Beach City Colleges on Friday.
The Lancers defeated Rio Hondo, 161-50, while losing to Long Beach, 166-90. PCC is 1-4 in SCC meets.
To coasted to a 7-second victory in the 100-yard butterfly (53.22) and then won Secretariat-style by almost 17 seconds over his next competitor in the 200 butterfly (2:02.10). To placed second in the 200 freestyle at 1:51.93.
Michael Chiodo swam a dominating 2:09.73 (next place was 2:23.26) to take first place in the 200 individual medley. Chiodo was out-touched by Long Beach's Mackenzie Aakhus in the 200 backstroke, taking second at 2:05.99 to Aakhus' 2:05.90. Chiodo, a sophomore from Kennedy High, settled for second behind Aakhus in the 100 backstroke at 57.32.
Anderson outdueled Vikings' diver Oscar Alfonso, 130.90 to 117, to win the combined 1&3-meter board competition. John Darrin Smith led after one leg, but would take second in the 200 breaststroke in a 2:28.08 time. Smith finished .23 of a second behind LBCC's Brant Rider. Smith also grabbed second in the 50 freestyle (24.41). Willie Nitinthorn had a pair of seconds in the 100 freestyle (2.73) and 100 butterfly (1:00.10).
In an exciting 200 medley relay, the Lancers' unit of Chiodo, Smith, To and Nitinthorn swam a 1:43.75, again just being edged by LBCC's squad at 1:43.27. Nitinthorn's anchor split of 22.86 almost put PCC over the top.
"Chiodo had a great week of training and it culminated with his great competition on Friday," said PCC head coach Terry Stoddard. "We put in a solid race the whole way in the 200 medley. Stephen is on a good pace right now to set him up for state."
