News: More PCC School Records Shattered On Day 1, SCC Swim Finals
Shannon Cheung broke the 14th different Pasadena City College women's swim school record set this season Thursday in winning the 500-yard freestyle title on day 1 of the 2013 South Coast Conference Swimming Championships at Chaffey College. Cheung's victory was one of five PCC records shattered thus far at the conference finals.
Cheung, a freshman who grew up in South Pasadena and later attended American school in China, broke an 8-year-old Lancers record in the 500 as she swam 5 minutes, 9.89 seconds. The mark surpassed Joelle Johnson's 2005 record of 5:13.57.
Emily Frederick broke her own school record in the 100 backstroke on the opening leg of PCC's triumph in the 400 medley relay. Frederick opened with a 1:00.22 (beating her previous best of 1:01.93) as the Lancers proceeded to snap the school record in that event at 4:05.97. The dynamic unit of Frederick, Arolyn Basham, Paige Watroba and Cheung obliterated its own record of 4:14.61 by nearly nine seconds.
Frederick, who has established herself as the best sprint swimmer in PCC women's history in just her first season at the college, proved that statement with a new school standard in the 50 freestyle. She won the SCC title with a blistering 24.57 mark, .34 of a second faster than her previous best set at the Pasadena Invitational just a week ago.
Finally, the Lancers also busted their own 2013 record in winning the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:41.24. That mark was 2.18 seconds quicker than last week's previous record.
Basham placed a close second to Cerritos swimmer Raquel Gabayeron, swimming a 1:02.81 to the winning 1:02.21 in the 100 individual medley.
PCC stands in fourth place (149.5 points) in the conference standings with two days remaining in the SCC Championships. The Lancers are directed by head coach Terry Stoddard.
Michael Chiodo swam to fourth place with a personal best 1:59.13 in the 200 individual medley. The Lancers are in fifth place after day 1 of the SCC Championships with 105 points.
