News: Women's Swim: 4 SCC Title Wins Highlighted By Medley Relay Record

In the history of South Coast Conference swimming, no women's relay squad had ever eclipsed the four minute mark in the 400-yard medley relay. That was until four Pasadena City College swimmers blew a 14-year-old SCC record right out of the water Thursday on the opening day of the SCC Championships at Mt. San Antonio College.

Connie Peng, Arolyn Basham, Tiffany Wong, and Shannon Cheung smashed PCC's school record by seven seconds and Golden West's 2000 mark of 4:02.56 by more than three seconds in establishing a new conference record of 3:58.94 in the event title win. The freshman Peng's opening leg of 58.10 is a new PCC record in the 100-yard backstroke as it snapped Cheung's record set last year of 59.27.

Basham, Peng, Wong and Cheung had earlier captured the 200 freestyle relay title with a school record of 1:39.62 as Cheung anchored with an explosive 23.89 final split. Cheung and Basham were members of the old PCC record set in 2013 of 1:41.24.

Those two sophomores though made it a banner afternoon for the Lancers as each recorded conference individual title victories. Cheung, last season's SCC Swimmer of the Year, became a repeat champion in the 500 freestyle as she swam 5:06.28, easily breaking her own school record of 5:09.89.

Basham won her first SCC individual title with her triumph in the 100 individual medley in a personal best 1:01.13 (not a school record). Basham finished second in the event at last year's championships.

PCC is directed by head coach Terry Stoddard.

The SCC Championships continue Friday-Saturday, April 18-19 in Walnut.
