News: Women's Swim In 6th Place After Day 1 Of State Meet

While no school records were set Thursday, the Pasadena City College women's swim team had a strong start to the California Community College Athletic Association Championships by scoring 91 points to currently place it sixth after day 1 of the meet. The state meet is being hosted by East Los Angeles College and continues on Friday-Saturday, May 2-3.

The Lancers, who finished a program-best eighth last year, scored a third place medal by sophomore Shannon Cheung in the 500-yard freestyle, a fourth place by sophomore Arolyn Basham in the 100 individual medley, fourth in the 400 medley relay, and a sixth in the 200 freestyle relay.

Cheung led early in the 500 but weakened later in the event and finished at 5:08.82. Basham swam well in the 100 IM, finishing in 1:01.04. Teammate Tiffany Wong was fifth in the 100 IM consolation final.

In the 400 medley relay, Connie Peng, Basham, Wong and Cheung swam a 4:00.90, slower than the squad's school record (and South Coast Conference record) of 3:58.94. The four nearly caught the PCC 200 free relay record, but its 1:39.78 was .16 off its record set at this year's SCC Finals.

Note: A PCC men's note was incorrect in the first release. Mohammad Esmaeilian has two more events giving PCC men an opportunity to score points. He finished 23rd in the 50 freestyle.
