News: Track and Field's Caleb Wood Repeats SCC Javelin Title
Pasadena City College men's track and field thrower Caleb Wood won his second straight South Coast Conference title in the javelin event Tuesday, winning with a throw of 184 feet, 2 inches at the SCC Prelims Meet held at Mt. San Antonio College.
Wood became the first PCC male athlete to repeat a conference title since 4-time state champion Edino Steele won back-to-back, 200-meter dash crowns in 2006 and 2007. Wood's throw raised him to No. 11 in the state.
Fharhaad Zinnamon's bid to win the triple jump ended with him taking second place with a 46-feet, 4-inch leap. Ricky Carrigan Jr. of Cerritos won the event at 47-4.5. Zinnamon is ninth on the state list.
Only some of the events were played out as finals at the Prelims, including the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Lancer sophomore Kevin Cano placed third in an exciting race that came down to the final 100 meters. Cano ran a 9:44.20, just behind second-place Gonzalo Ceja (East Los Angeles) at 9:43.90, and conference champion Brandon Taylor (Cerritos) at 9;41.10. Cano's 9:37.40 at the Mt. SAC Relays is still No. 6 in the state.
Lancer Brendan Greene took 15th in the 10,000 meters with a time of 35:15.62.
In the women's 10,000 meters finals, Arielle Barragan-Steimer took fourth place with a time of 41 minutes, 12.61 seconds. She is fourth in the state with her 39:29.88 at the Occidental Distance Carnival.
In the women's javelin finals, Rossha Harris of PCC placed sixth (behind five Cerritos throwers) with a throw of 109-6. Harris is ninth in the state in the event with an early-season throw of 118-6. Harris also was sixth in the shot put with her season-best 36-5.5.
Omhunique Browne seems poised to win both sprint events as she had the fastest times in the prelims in both the 100 (11.96) and 200 (24.38).
The Lancers teams, directed by head coach Larry Wade and distance coach Armand Crespo, will participate in the rest of the events at the SCC Finals to be held Friday, April 26 at Mt. SAC.
