News: State No. 8 Women's Volleyball Sweep Two Ranked Teams At ECC Quad
Maybe the most impressive item to come out of the El Camino College Quad Tournament Friday wasn't that the state No. 8-ranked Pasadena City College women's volleyball won two more matches. It was the fact that while PCC swept No. 21 Cypress, tourney host and currently state No. 3 El Camino was surprised in five sets by that same Cypress team.
"Anything can happen from now until conference, but that's an eye opener," PCC head coach Tammy Silva said about the ECC loss. "It tells us two things. One is that we know that we should compete well with El Camino. Two is that means we have a shot at winning the South Coast title."
The Lancers are a perfect 5-0 after sweeping Cypress, 25-19, 25-18, 25-12, and No. 19 Santa Barbara City College, 25-19, 25-23, 25-17. Against Cypress, sophomore outside hitter Jennifer Estrada totaled a double-double on 10 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Jackie Valle-Acosta added eight kills and seven of the team's 12 blocks for points, including three solo stuffs. Second-year opposite Yanise Joseph delivered nine kills in just 11 attempts while second-year setter Kailey Faust contributed 38 assists and three blocks.
Frosh outside hitter Nora To'omalatai chipped in eight kills and transfer libero Cassandra Delacruz made 15 digs. Freshman Briana Hilton had eight digs off the bench. Sophomore middle blocker Megan Callen performed three of the team's seven aces.
In the SBCC victory, Valle-Acosta took charge with a team-high 11 kills, three blocks and five digs. To'omalatai spiked nine kills with three blocks and Callen put down six kills and four blocks. Estrada had a match-high 12 digs and Viradiana Gallardo had three kills and 10 digs.
Once again, the Lancers showed outstanding efficiency and error-free play. In two matches, the team recorded 12 aces, made just seven service errors (one v. Santa Barbara) and had only four serve receive mistakes.
PCC next plays on Wednesday, Sept. 19 when it travels to face No. 10 Orange Coast College.
