News: Blank Now All-Time Leading Women's Water Polo Scorer
Sophomore Makenzie Blank scored her own career high of nine goals and in the process became Pasadena City College's all-time leading goal scorer in women's water polo during a 14-12 overtime loss at El Camino College Wednesday afternoon.
Blank has 114 career goals, distancing her from previous leader Lybov Tchougounova, who scored 105 goals in one season (2007). Blank raised her 2012 team-high season total to 35 goals. Blank's nine scores is the second highest single-game total in Lancers' history, and two shy of the record set by Tchougounova of 11 goals in an Oct. 26, 2007 match v. Santa Monica.
PCC once again played an intense, close contest only to lose to the Warriors in the two extra 3-minute non-sudden death periods. The Lancers were tied at 10-10 at the end of regulation, but El Camino's Alexis Solaris scored four of her team-high six goals during the OT to send Pasadena to defeat.
The Lancers are 0-4 in South Coast Conference play and 2-6 overall. However, PCC has lost by a margin of one goal to powerful Long Beach, two against Chaffey, and now two v. El Camino.
At 5:17 of the first quarter, Blank (from Temple City High) scored her record goal on a flip shot off a pass by Paloma Barrera. It was Blank's first attempt of the game.
“It’s really cool,” Blank told the Pasadena Sun of breaking the Lancers' goals mark. “It’s like a really big accomplishment to know that my name will be in the record book at PCC. I’m glad and I’m going to start working on getting more assists now.”
Milene Minassians, Taylor Guidera, and Naoni Padilla added a goal each. Goalie Shelby Gregg finished with 12 saves.
PCC hosts the 12th Pasadena Bowl Tournament Friday-Saturday, October 5-6 at the Aquatic Center. The Lancers will play four matches over the two days against LA Pierce (12:20 p.m.) and Southwestern (3:50 p.m.) on Friday and v. Cerritos (Now changed to 10:10 a.m.) and Citrus (2:40 p.m.) on Saturday.
