News: WWP's Rack Sets Single-Game Assists Record (7) At Battle at the Beach Tournament
Freshman Marisa Rack set a new Pasadena City College women's water polo team single-game record by passing out seven assists in the Lancers' 15-10 victory over Saddleback at the Long Beach City College-hosted Battle at the Beach Tournament October 20.
Rack's seven helpers snapped the record previously held by teammate Paloma Barrera (2011) and former Lancer Nicole Young (2010), who each had six assists in a match. Rack (from Vista Murrieta High) added two goals and a team-high five steals.
Also in the Saddleback win, Milene Minassians (Glendale High) scored six goals and Naoni Padilla (South Pasadena) added three goals. Top goal scorer Makenzie Blank (Temple City) tallied four goals and two assists. Goalie Shelby Gregg (Crescenta Valley) recorded 14 saves. PCC trailed 8-7 at halftime v. Saddleback, but scored four goals in each of the final two quarters to break away.
PCC then matched its season-high in goals with another 15 net shots in a 15-10 triumph over Southwestern that allowed the Lancers to finish 2-2 at the tournament. On the first day played at Cypress College, PCC lost a pair of tough games, falling to San Diego Mesa, 6-4, and defeated by Cuesta, 13-11, on October 19.
In the Southwestern win, Blank and Minassians each clicked for four goals while Rack was a perfect 3-for-3 on shots. Barrera (Burroughs) added two goals, Padilla one, and Paige Watroba (Laguna Beach) one. Giselle Mendieta (LA Marshall) contributed three assists. Blank made six steals and Racked added four.
Against Mesa, Rack and Blank both had a goal and five steals. Yukiyo Ueda (Temple City) and Minassians had the other goals. Gregg totaled 12 saves and also made three steals.
Against Cuesta, the Lancers rallied from down 9-3 but couldn't quite catch the Cougars. Blank poured in seven goals and two assists to go with five steals. Rack added the hat trick in goals, four assists and five steals. Blank scored four goals in the fourth quarter, all on helpers by Rack.
The Lancers are 7-15 overall, and have won three of their last five games. Blank leads the team with 72 goals (all-time school leading scorer with a current 151). Rack continues to top the squad in assists (29) and steals (51). Gregg has surpassed her save total of last year with 216.
PCC played at Rio Hondo today (Wednesday, October 24) in a South Coast Conference match.
