News: Water Polo Rallies From 5 Goals Down, Beats LATT In OT, 15-14
In a match where no lead was safe, the Pasadena City College women's water polo team pulled out a thrilling 15-14, overtime victory over Los Angeles Trade Tech Friday in the first round of the 13th Pasadena Bowl Tournament.
The Lancers (2-11) rallied from a 9-4 third-quarter deficit to take their first lead of the game with 35 seconds left in the fourth period on a goal by Jazmine Hernandez. LA Trade Tech answered with nine seconds remaining on a score by Estefany Puente to send the match into overtime at 12-12.
After Stephanie Velasco scored with a minute left in the second, 3-minute overtime session to give PCC a 14-13 lead, LA Trade Tech once again knotted it on on Jennifer Rubio's seventh goal of the match with just 22 seconds to go. Hernandez responded taking a pass from Mariana Silva and firing in the game-winning goal with only 13 seconds on the clock.
Trade Tech tried one more time to send it into a sudden death overtime, but Velasco came up with the defensive play of the game as she caught the arm of Trade Tech's Ceelia Hernandez at point blank range of the PCC goal. Hernandez lost control of the ball as time expired.
For Pasadena, freshman Caroline Liu (Mark Keppel High) scored a team season-high seven goals, including three during PCC's rally in the fourth quarter. The freshman Jazmine Hernandez (Alhambra High) had perhaps the finest all-around performance by a Lancer all season with four goals, four assists and seven steals. Velasco (Eagle Rock High) contributed three goals and three assists. Freshman winger Camille Saurenman (Pasadena HS) scored a goal and had two assists. Silva chipped in three assists. Goalie Alenoush Aslanin (Glendale) made four saves defending the PCC net.
