Frequently Asked Questions
1) Check the tutoring schedule in the LAC or online 2) Come to the Front Desk of the LAC during the scheduled hours and complete the paperwork; it will not take very long. 3) Scan your card to get a ticket at the Front Desk, find the tutor (tutors have a sign in front of them showing which subjects they tutor), sign in (each tutor has his or her own sign-in sheet), and give him or her the ticket. The tutor may have others to finish up with but will help you as soon as possible. 4) Scan out when you leave.
No, but you are welcome to use them for extended periods of time on site during our open hours.
Most students ask about our books with CDs or cassettes. Some of these are available at the PCC bookstore, but please make sure that the students in those classes are able to purchase them first. Also, you can copy down the ISBN (International Standard Book Number), the title, and the author and order any book at any bookstore. For information on other materials, such as DVDs and software, you may ask Eileen Snyder or go online to find them.
No. Tutoring services at the Learning Assistance Center are free of charge as long as you are currently enrolled in the class for which you are requesting tutoring. You do need to have proper paperwork in place to receive tutoring. Please visit the Learning Assistance Center for more information.
Tutoring at the Learning Assistance Center is provided by Pasadena City College students who have successfully completed the courses they are tutoring, as well as a certified tutor training program. Each tutor must have a referral from his or her professor that indicates competency in the subject area. Some subjects, such as English and mathematics, require a diagnostic test.
The Learning Assistance Center has two different areas of tutoring: General Education and Career and Technical Education. To become a tutor, you need to go to the LAC (D300) and request an application form from Candy Avila, Aida Dzhanunts, or John Wood. You must have successfully completed the course you want to tutor, have a PCC faculty referral, and be currently enrolled in 6 or more units at Pasadena City College. Generally, the LAC provides tutoring for English, English as a Second Language, Mathematics, Statistics, Accounting, Economics, and Foreign Languages. Depending on the needs of our students and availability of competent tutors, we will make the effort to accommodate your needs. Career and Technical Education tutoring provides assistance in all classes leading to a certificate.
The schedule for tutoring varies every semester. It is posted in the LAC (D300) beginning at the second week of the term. Please come to the center for the most updated hours, or visit us at www.pasadena.edu/studentservices/lac/ and select the area of your interest (general education or career & technical education).
The Learning Assistance Center offers walk-in and group tutoring according to a posted schedule. During each tutor's scheduled time, students will be assisted on a first come, first served basis; no appointments are necessary.
No. Unfortunately we do no have tutoring for high school and middle school students. Please contact your school district for referrals.
LAC hours during the fall and spring semseters are as follows: Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 9:45 p.m., Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. (except for the last Saturday).
