The Writing Center employs an average of 40 student workers each semester. You may be employed as either a tutor or as a staff worker.

Tutor responsibilities and requirements:

  • Meet with students in one-on-one or small-group tutoring sessions
  • Check students in and out of the Writing Center
  • Provide support for students working in the computer lab and video stations
  • Enforce all Writing Center rules
  • Perform general clerical and maintenance tasks as may be required

To be hired as a tutor, a student must pass English 1A with a grade of "A" and pass a basic grammar skills test.

Staff responsibilities and requirements:

  • Check students in and out of the Writing Center
  • Provide support for students working in the computer lab and video stations
  • Enforce all Writing Center rules
  • Perform general clerical and maintenance tasks as may be required

To be hired as a staff employee, a student must be enrolled in either the "Federal Workstudy Program" or the "CalWorks" program. Special English skills are not required for this position.
