Exams and Certificates |

The HSK offers three different tests: Basic; Elementary-Intermediate;
and Advanced. Examinees also have the option of choosing
between the Traditional and Simplified character version
of the tests.
|
- BASIC (135 minutes):
For those with basic knowledge of Chinese, 100-800 hours
of classroom instruction, an accumulated vocabulary
of 400-3,000 characters at the A and B levels, and understanding
of corresponding grammar rules. The test includes sections
on listening and reading comprehension and grammar.
- ELEMENTARY-INTERMEDIATE (145 minutes):
For those with elementary and intermediate knowledge
of Chinese, 400-2,000 hours of classroom instruction,
an accumulated vocabulary of 2,000-5,000 characters

grammar rules for these levels. The test includes sections
on listening and reading comprehension, grammar, and
fill-in-the-blank.

hours or more of classroom instruction, an accumulated
vocabulary of over 5,000 characters at A, B, C, and
D levels, as well as understanding of the corresponding
grammar rules for these levels. The test consists of
sections on listening and reading comprehension, comprehensive
expression, composition, as well as an oral exam.

Certificates of Proficiency:
Certificates are issued by the State Committee for the
Chinese Proficiency Test of China and rewarded to test-takers
when they meet the minimum level of proficiency required
within each level of testing. For example, those who pass
the HSK Basic or Advanced test may receive a certificate
of either A, B, or C, with A being the highest mark. The
HSK Intermediate test, however, has six levels of certificates,
ranging from Elementary A, B, and C to Intermediate A,
B, and C. Score reports and certificates are mailed from
the HSK headquarters in Beijing to Pasadena City College
within 90 days of the test date. The PCC/HSK site will
then distribute the results to students, either by mail
or pick-up.

Advantages of Obtaining HSK
Certification:
HSK certificates confirm mastery of Chinese language
skills, respective to the amount of instruction received.
The test is quickly becoming an important measure of Chinese
proficiency in education and job recruiting, where language
competency is a great asset. Minimum HSK proficiency is
a prerequisite when applying to educational institutions
in China. In addition, those who have passed the HSK test
at any level are exempt from corresponding coursework
at national colleges and universities. Certificates are
permanently valid, with the exception of enrollment into
educational institutions, where scores are valid for up
to two years from the date of examination. |
