This course acquaints students with the basic features and highlights
of Chinese civilization from neolithic times down to the present. It
examines both the evolution and the continuities of this ancient culture,
including aspects of philosophy, religion, gender roles, literature
and art. We will study some of the cultural implications such as geomancy,
Buddhist or Taoist practices, acupuncture, martial arts, herbal medicine
and other healing foods, as they become integrated into our way of life.
The course is interactive in its discussion both in the classroom and
via the use of the internet to better appreciate the myriad faces of
Chinese culture.
