Kinetic Energy, 2003
Ries Niemi, artist

At the Del Mar station, Ries Niemi created a hand-wrought fence for this station. This fence spans approximately 550 feet. The historical Art Deco buildings and Craftsman Style homes of Pasadena inspired Niemi's aesthetic. These repeating motifs of steel concentric discs, axles and pistons highlight the Industrial Revolution. Neimi's Kinetic Energy celebrates the fusion of art and technology. The beauty of Neimi's design allows passengers to feel graceful and elegant. The arrangement of these metaphoric machine elements conveys a fluid and polished rhythm, analogous to a hymn honoring transportation.
