Writing in the Field of Automotive Technology
Audience and Purpose
Before beginning to write a paper or any other writing assignment, ask yourself these two questions: “Who is going to read my paper?” and “Why am I writing this paper?” Answering these two fundamental questions forces you to consider two things: audience and your purpose.
- Audience can simply be described as the person or people to whom you are writing.
- For example, if you are an engineering student, your audience is your engineering teacher or your engineering classmates. If you are working as a professional engineer, your audience is engineers.
- Remember, your audience will determine the format of your writing assigment (i.e., essay, presentation, or report) and your choice of words.
- Purpose is the reason why you are writing.
- For example, as engineering students, your purpose might be to put together a presentation of your portfolio at the end of the course. The purpose of this presentation is to explain and describe the content in your portfolio.
- Remember, your purpose will determine what information goes into your assignment.
After you have established your audience and purpose, the actual writing process can begin. Below is a general sequence of writing steps taken in the writing proces:
- Identify your audience and purpose.
- Brainstorm and outline ideas.
- Gather and think about your ideas, research, drawing, and examples.
- Organize your ideas and information in a logical and clear order.
- Make an outline to clarify your purpose.
- Write a draft.
- Revise your draft yourself or by asking teacher, tutors, peers.
- Repeat your revisions and drafts.
- Edit and proofread by rereading your paper and looking for spelling, grammar, punctuation and referencing mistakes.
- Turn in your paper.
