How to Get a Grant at PCC
Suppose you have an idea for a project or you learn of a grant opportunity you would like to pursue. Because all grants are contracts between the district and the funding source, the Grants Office will help you navigate the process you’ll need to follow to apply for funding.
Here are the steps that will turn a grant idea into a completed application.
- Your first step is to complete an Initial Grant Proposal Form outlining your project objectives, activities, and budget requirements. The purpose of the form is to help you think through all aspects of your proposed project (such as where needed equipment will be housed, or whether the project will require clerical support), so answer all the questions as clearly and completely as you can.
- After you have completed the form, discuss it with your division dean or department manager and obtain their signature. Some proposals may also require approval by the vice president who oversees your department. This approval process is designed to ensure that grant applications are consistent with the mission and goals of the college and do not conflict with other projects being developed.
- Call the Grants Office at extension 7722 to discuss your project. If you don’t have a funding source in mind, we will help identify potential funders for your project and obtain guidelines and application materials.
- If the project will be submitted to a public funding source (Federal, state or local government), we will prepare and submit a summary to the college’s Executive Committee for review.
- Once all approvals have been obtained, we will help you write and edit your proposal narrative and budget.
- When the proposal is finished, we will submit it to the funding source. Applications to public funding sources will also be reported to the Board of Trustees. Applications to private funding sources (private foundations or corporate giving programs) will be submitted through the PCC Foundation.
- If your grant application is funded, we will review budget and reporting requirements with you. Grants from public sources require a District cost center to track expenditures. When a grant is received from a private source, the PCC Foundation will establish an account for grant activities.
- If your grant application is not funded, the Grants Office will help you determine your next step. Public sources will usually provide reviewers’ comments that can be used to revise and resubmit your application in the next funding cycle. When the potential funder is a private source, we will follow up to determine if it is best to resubmit or seek another funding source.
