The Teaching and Learning Center's counselors are dedicated to serving the needs of the diverse population of students that are enrolled in one or more TLC program, including Career Pathways, .XL and MaS.

Pasadena City College TLC counselors provide comprehensive counseling to:

  • First-generation college students
  • Students in need of basic skills
  • Students in need of ESL instruction
  • Students on academic or progress probation
  • Students pursuing a AA/AS degree and/or transferring to a four-year college
  • Students interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) majors
  • Students interested in pursuing careers in teaching, nursing, business and art/design.

Counseling Session:

During a counseling session one or more of the following areas may be addressed:

  • Creation of an educational plan
  • Selection of courses for the semester
  • Setting of long and short-term goals
  • Personal counseling outside of academics
  • Career exploration
  • Review of English and math placement scores
  • Review requirements for four-year colleges
  • Assistance with financial aid
  • Referral to other services on campus
  • Registration of TLC courses
  • Selection of appropriate courses towards an AA or AS degree or transferable to CSU, UC, or private universities
  • Discussion of IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum)

Counseling Intervention Session:

During a counseling intervention session one or more of the following strategies may be addressed:

  • Identification of academic barriers (e.g., absences, low test scores)
  • Creation of an action plan for success
  • Assignment of a TLC tutor to the student if needed
  • Recommendation of a workshop (e.g., time management, study skills, testing taking)
  • Review of work and school load with student
  • Referral of student services on campus

Counseling Transfer Session:

During a counseling transfer session one or more of the following strategies may be addressed:

  • Discussion of Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) agreements between PCC and specific colleges
  • Discussion of student's major and university transfer options
  • Review of requirements needed to transfer
  • Information on the transfer process to a UC,CSU, or private university
  • Special programs on campus (e.g., MESA, Scholar's Program) that will enhance the student's chances of being accepted by the transfer institution of his or her choice
