Each spring, the Pasadena City College Special Recognition committee carries out the
important work of determining the recipients of the annual Campus Special Recognition
and Community Special Recognition Awards. The committee’s membership includes
student, faculty, staff, and administration representatives. The Special Recognition
Awards are bestowed on individuals and organizations in recognition of extraordinary and
exemplary service rendered to the college. This year, the college will honor one
organization for the Community Special Recognition Award and two individuals for the
Campus Special Recognition Award.
The 2008 Community Special Recognition Award goes to Huntington Memorial
Hospital. Huntington Memorial Hospital has supported the Health Science programs at
Pasadena City College for more than 40 years and assisted in transforming PCC into a
better institution.
Huntington Memorial Hospital has supported student success by providing uniforms,
books, and training, as well as providing scholarships for deserving Pasadena City
College Health Science students. The Hospital has been a partner to Pasadena City
College and provided mentoring and employment opportunities to the nursing students at
the college.
The 2008 Campus Special Recognition Award goes to Ms. Susanna Miele. As a friend
to Pasadena City College, Ms. Miele has given more than 24 years to transforming PCC
into a better institution. Her outstanding service to the Pasadena community as an
advocate for women’s issues and child development through local organizations and city
commissions has brought these important issues the attention they richly deserve.
Through her unyielding support of the District’s Measure P campaign, she has assured
students the resources needed to succeed.
The PCC Child Development Center was created through Ms. Miele’s dedication and
her vision for better opportunities for students and the community. Her friendly demeanor
and professionalism has served to bring PCC and community members together in
constructive communication and partnership. Through her tireless efforts in support of
student success as a Board of Trustee member at PCC, Ms. Miele has served as a model
to her peers across the state of California.
The 2008 Campus Special Recognition Award goes to Ms. Kathryn Dabelow. Ms.
Dabelow, as a friend to Pasadena City College, has given more than 41 years to
transforming PCC into a better institution. Her leadership as president of the PCC
Academic Senate has served as a barometer of wisdom to the association and the college.
Ms. Dabelow’s vision also spearheaded the creation of the women’s studies program at
PCC and the creation of the Women in American Society field of study.
Ms. Dabelow’s unsurpassed commitment to student enrichment and diversity was
recognized with the Ralph Story Service Award in 1989. Through her tireless efforts in
support of student success as a distinguished educator and leader, she has served as a
model to her peers at PCC and across the state of California.
Join us in congratulating this year ’s Campus and Community Special Recognition
