Frequently Made Mistakes in Grammar and Mechanics

Phrases to avoid and phrases to use
  • Don’t usebeing that or being as because it is not a substitute for because.
    • WRONG:  The boss deducted money from my paycheck being that/being as I was late for work.
    • CORRECT:  The boss deducted money from my paycheck because I was late for work.
  • Don’t use:  and also because it is redundant.
    • WRONG:  Technical writing and also technical spelling are the most difficult things to learn in science and technology courses.
    • CORRECT:  Technical writing and technical spelling are the most difficult things to learn in science and technology courses.
  • Don’t use:  basically/ essentially/totally because they do not add useful information to a sentence.  Try removing these words and you will see that the sentence almost always improves.
    • WRONG:  Studying for a test basically/essentially/totally helps improve my score.
    • CORRECT:  Studying for a test helps improve my score.
