News: PCC To Offer Academic Study In Costa Rica Winter 2010

Pasadena City College will be providing students and the community with an opportunity to study abroad in Costa Rica during the upcoming winter intersession, from Jan. 29 to Feb. 10.

The course will blend together global and local perspectives in order to identify and understand environmental issues in developing countries. By incorporating a variety of scientific principles and case studies and performing various field projects, students will discover the fundamental principles of environmental science.

Field and classroom activities will cover diverse topics, including water and soil chemistry, habitat degradation and fragmentation, biodiversity estimates, reserve design and management, conservation issues, ethnobiology, ethnochemistry, agriculture, and restoration ecology. Field trips and classroom exercises will be conducted for two weeks at PCC prior to departure and for two weeks in Costa Rica by visiting many different environments and ecosystems.

Those interested in the program are encouraged to attend the informational meeting on Oct. 6, from noon to 1 p.m. in Room U408. For more information, contact Darcy Mack at (626) 585-3245 or Dr. Paul Jarrell at (626) 585-7168.
