News: Two PCC Students Earn Prestigious Russian Scholarships

Two Pasadena City College Russian language students have received scholarships to participate in Cal State University Northridge’s Strategic Language Institute in Russian. The program offers a unique opportunity for students wishing to acquire professional language proficiency.

“Our students were among the top achievers in the course,” said Theodore Young, division dean of Languages at PCC.

Robyn Latimer and Sarah Sleuder both received admission into the 13-month intensive program after finishing Russian 4 with high marks during the spring semester of 2008. Students who are accepted into this highly competitive program had to dedicate six weeks during summer 2008 in residence at CSUN.

“They were two of the best students in the SLI program at CSUN,” said Dina Mokhnatkin, coordinator for the Russian SLI Immersion Program.

The immersion program is followed by the 2008-20099 academic year with a set of individualized courses in Russian language with relevance toward the students’ majors. The program culminates with a six-week trip studying abroad in Russia.
