News: ‘Baby Banana Tree’ Sculpture to be Unveiled at Pasadena City College on May 30

“Baby Banana Tree,” a 25-foot tall, hand-painted sculpture by artist Yutaka Sone, will be unveiled to the public on May 30 as the latest addition to the Boone Sculpture Garden at Pasadena City College. The unveiling event and reception for the artist will take place from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Galloway Plaza on PCC’s campus.

Working with fabricator José Noe Suro Salceda, the work was built of fiberglass and mixed media at the artist’s studio in Guadalajara, Mexico, and hand-finished at the Pasadena site. Sone, an internationally acclaimed artist who retains studios in Japan, Guadalajara, and California, describes the new sculpture as “my best work.”

Born in Shizuoka, Japan, in 1965, Sone has gained widespread international recognition as an artist. Sone’s work is held in many public collections, including those of MOCA and the Tate Gallery, London.

The “Baby Banana Tree” sculpture was made possible by the generosity of Pasadena philanthropist Adelaide Hixon.
