News: Lecture Series, Events to Highlight African American Heritage Month

Pasadena City College is recognizing African American Heritage Month with a series of lectures and events that bring an array of prominent artists, scholars, musicians, performers, writers, and playwrights to the college community.

“A Hearing and a Listening: Stories of the Africa Diaspora and Pasadena,” the title if this year’s Jackie Robinson Arts & Humanities Lecture Series, is being curated by PCC History Professor Dr. Christopher Jimenez y West.

The series begins with a talk by historian, novelist, and poet Susan D. Anderson on Feb. 21, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in PCC’s Creveling Lounge. She will be discussing the experiences of African Americans in the early 20th century in California.

On Feb. 26, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Jackie Robinson Center in Pasadena, a “Senior Panel” will be moderated by Johari Dewitt-Rogers, former director of Media Services at PCC.

On Feb. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Creveling Lounge, former U.S. Congressman Mervyn Dymally will be exploring the evolution of cultural identities and politics in California spanning his political career in an “interview.”

On Feb. 29, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Creveling Lounge, Janira Teague, UCLA doctoral student in history, will present her current research on the impact of Afro-Caribbean migration into Harlem during the 20th century.

In addition to the lecture series, PCC will also be hosting a number of cultural events throughout the month. Iconic photos of the South African jazz age, Apartheid era, and early life of Nelson Mandela are on display in PCC’s Shatford Library rotunda from now until Feb. 27. The exhibit features the work of Jurgen Schadeberg, recognized worldwide as a pioneer of South African photography.

Additionally, PCC’s Ujima Program is bringing Kabasa African Drummers on Feb. 21. Musician Geminelle Rollins will also be performing on Feb. 23. Both events will take place in the PCC Quad.
