News: Calabro Exhibit Opens Oct. 12 in PCC Art Gallery

A new installation by artist Victoria Calabro will be on display beginning Friday, Oct. 12 in the Pasadena City College Art Gallery. “Sentimental Spit Shine” will feature cast- and hot-worked glass objects as part of a colorful, immersive environment.

Brooklyn-based Calabro has begun to garner national attention for her work. Her artwork has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the United States, including works currently on exhibition at the New Mexico Museum of Art.

“Her work crosses a number of art-world boundaries: she works in casting and manipulating glass, which is usually found in the context of a craft tradition,” said Brian Tucker, associate professor in PCC’s Visual Arts and Media Studies division. “But she embeds her glass sculptures into playful, immersive installations that seem to address the work of avant-garde fine artists like Richard Tuttle and Yayoi Kusama.”

Calabro was previously a teaching assistant for PCC sculpture professor Yolanda McKay when she taught at Indiana University. She will be working with McKay’s class while on campus.
