News: Sandra Haynes Receives Prestigious Board of Governors Hayward Award

Haynes with PACCD Trustee Geoffrey Baum

Pasadena City College Professor Sandra Haynes was one of only four individuals to be honored with the 2013 Gerald C. Hayward Award for Excellence in Education, presented by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors on March 4.

The award honors outstanding community college faculty who have a track record of excellence both in teaching and in professional activities and have demonstrated commitment to their students, profession, and college. Peers from their college nominate faculty members for this honor.

Haynes is a graduate of Pasadena City College, where she took her first art history course. She went on to earn her advanced degree in art history at UCLA. Her long-standing appreciation for and understanding of how community colleges historically serve a diverse population is the foundation of her passion and dedication to the faculty and students at Pasadena City College. She devotes time and energy to promoting student success and cultural diversity in the art history curriculum, having developed courses in Contemporary Art History, the History of Islamic Art, and History of Pre-Columbian Art.

Haynes, who earned a master’s degree in Instructional Design and Technology in 2006, went on to create an award-winning, online art history course, Art Fundamentals. She then worked to help the college grow its distance education program by spearheading the development of distance education processes and procedures as Chair of the Distance Education Committee. Additionally, she serves as a mentor for the CCC @ONE Teaching Certification Program. Haynes creates podcasts in association with her work as a founding member of the renowned PCC Visual Arts and Media Studies (VAMS) Artist-in-Residence Committee. She is also proud of the work she continues to do as statewide Academic Senate FDRG Lead (Faculty Discipline Review Group) working on C-ID and articulation.

Haynes is the first instructor from PCC to receive the Hayward Award for Excellence in Education. “This award is an extraordinary honor. I am humbled by the recognition for work that I love doing,” she said.

Haynes, along with the three other California community college faculty members, received a plaque and $1,250.
