News: PCC Alum Yura Movsisyan Shines In Russian Soccer League

The legend of former Pasadena City College men's soccer player Yura Movsisyan continued to grow on March 10 when the U.S.-Armenian international scored three goals in his debut for Spartak Moscow during a 3-1 win over Terek Grozny. It was Movsisyan's debut for his new team in the Russian Premier League.

Movsisyan, 25, had signed one of the largest current contracts in international soccer (7.5 million euros) to play for Spartak after being the leading scorer in the FK League for Krasnodar. The one-time Lancer (2005 season) has 12 goals this season.

"It's the first hat trick of my professional career, coming in my first game for Spartak in front of our fans," Movsisyan told reporters with the game ball in his hand. "No doubt, this is a special day for me as I'm taking this ball home with me."

Movsisyan last scored a hat trick as a member of the Lancers when he potted three goals v. Compton College in a 4-1 PCC win on Nov. 8, 2005. Ironically, it was the last PCC home sporting event played on natural grass at Robinson Stadium, which went to an artificial field surface in the 2006 sports season.

Movsisyan went on to become the first draft choice ever of a community college player when he was chosen by the Kansas City Wizards as the surprising fourth overall pick in the 2006 Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft. He later played for a MLS Cup champion in 2009 for Real Salt Lake (Utah).

Movsisyan made a name for himself on the Armenia national team in 2010 during UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying play. He scored four goals and added five assists as one of the top scoring forwards in international contests.

At PCC, he was named the college's 2005-2006 Men's Athlete of the Year, All-South Coast Conference First Team, and he was the first PCC recipient of the CCCSIA State Athlete of the Month award in November, 2005. His 40 points (18 goals, four assists) for the Lancers was the second highest scoring season ever by a PCC player. He played under then head coach Cherif Zein, who directed PCC's soccer program from 1998-2009.
