News: Cheung Named SCC Women's Swimmer Of Year; PCC Sets 12 School Records

From a historic standpoint, it doesn't get better than the performance of the Pasadena City College women's swim team at the South Coast Conference Championships held April 18-20 at Chaffey College. The Lancers had no chance of capturing a conference team title due to their small numbers, but overall team success and new PCC records were a huge part of this weekend's outcome.

The Lancers reset 11 school records at the conference finals and added a brand new record to the mantle in the 500 freestyle. Overall, a tiny four-swimmer team has shattered an amazing 14 school records with the CCCAA State Championships still remaining in a memorable 2013 season.

PCC freshman Shannon Cheung was a part of seven school records, and frosh teammate Emily Frederick duplicated that feat. Cheung, however, drew the greater praise of SCC coaches for her versatility and her dramatic conference record from Friday in the 200-yard individual medley. Her three individual event gold medals, including Saturday's 59.27 time to win the 100 backstroke title capped Cheung being named the SCC Women's Swimmer of the Year. She is the first PCC swimmer to win the award in a decade. Lorean Mapp won in 2003 when the Lancers captured their only SCC team championship.

And despite the team's modest fifth-place team finish, standings totaled by points from all top eight places of every event, PCC head coach Terry Stoddard was honored by his peers as the South Coast Women's Coach of the Year.

Never has a team fifth-place finish been more misrepresented than here in swimming and diving. Chaffey won the conference title with 618 points while PCC totaled 406.5 points. Chaffey took first place in four events overall (two diving) while the Lancers won 50 percent of the events with 10 gold medal victories. Pasadena also totaled four second places to Chaffey's three (again two diving).

Cheung's backstroke title was just .18 of a second shy of a second conference record at the meet. Frederick, who battled back from a back injury and taken most of the Lancers' individual headlines from her performances throughout the season, was overshadowed at the conference finals by Cheung. But Frederick might have been voted top conference swimmer in any other year due to her three event victories. Frederick capped that Saturday with her school-record 53.04 seconds mark to win the 100 freestyle.

The Lancers closed the conference finals with a school-record 3:40.18 to win the 400 freestyle relay, their fourth relay title of the meet. Cheung, Arolyn Basham, Paige Watroba and Frederick snapped their previous best at the Pasadena Invitational by more than seven seconds.

The four Lancers will be in action at the CCCAA State Championships at East Los Angeles College April 25-27.
