News: Women's Volleyball Sweeps LATT In SCC Opener
The state's No. 12-ranked Pasadena City College women's volleyball team opened the South Coast Conference schedule with a sweep over visiting Los Angeles Trade Tech College, 25-12, 25-14, 25-20, Friday night at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
The Lancers (7-3) outscored Trade Tech (0-2 overall), 8-1, capped by a pair of aces from libero Jennifer Estrada to end the first set. In the second game, PCC rattled off 14 consecutive points and coasted. In the third set, PCC head coach Tammy Silva used mostly reserves, which proved to make things a bit interesting.
With a team of smaller players, LA Trade Tech played inspired volleyball, including a kill by 5-foot reserve Rosa Rosales that caused the Lady Techsters players to get excited, down 18-16. Trade Tech would grab a 20-18 lead before Silva was forced to put three starters back in. One of those players was middle blocker Megan Callen, who slammed three kills during a 7-0 run to clinch the sweep. During Trade Tech's run, the Lancers made a seven unforced errors that reversed an early 12-7 PCC lead.
"Two encouraging things about this match was Megan Callen's hitting and just the solid consistency of our libero Jennifer Estrada," Silva said. "I need my bench players to pick it up, but I liked Thula Parks and her energy. She is young, but is going to be a really good hitter for us."
Parks came off the bench to ring up six kills in the second set. Nora To'omalatai once again led the Lancers in hitting with 12 kills to go with 11 digs. Callen pounded nine kills and had two blocks while fellow middle blocker Jackie Valle-Acosta added nine kills in just 14 attempts. Estrada had 15 digs and served three of the team's eight aces.
Second-string setter Lindsey Kuramato totaled 22 assists to tie starter Kaily Faust in that category. Starting outside hitter Viridiana Gallardo contributed five kills, six digs, two aces and two blocks.
The Lancers will travel to face East Los Angeles College on Wednesday, Oct. 3. Match time is 6 p.m.
