News: Men's Soccer Offense Can't Finish In 1-1 Tie v. LBCC
The Pasadena City College men's soccer team totaled 17 shots and had no less than 10 quality scoring chances, but the Lancers had to settle for a 1-1, South Coast Conference tie against Long Beach City College Tuesday at Robinson Stadium.
The Lancers (1-7-2 overall, 1-1-1 in conference play) played without head coach Edgar Manvelyan, who was serving a 1-game suspension after being red-carded during PCC's 3-0 loss at East Los Angeles College Sept. 28. With associate head coach Henry Cabral and assistant Alonzo Lopez in charge, PCC mounted an aggressive offensive attack against the visiting Vikings.
The game remained scoreless until the 68th minute when Zachary Larson deked his way past two defenders and fired in his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Long Beach (4-4-2, 1-0-2 in conference) fought back and tied it with 14 minutes left in the game on a hard shot by Manuel Larios following a throw-in by Jon-Eric Krans.
Pasadena can look back at a number of chances, including one in the 20th minute when Vahagn Manoyan got free through the box on a pass by Luis Flores, but his short attempt for the far right corner trickled wide. Earlier in the ninth minute, Michael Alcaraz fired a shot from 12 yards out that just missed wide. In the 12th minute, Hector Trujillo's free kick from 41 yards out hit the inside post on the fly. In the 31st minute, Larson was stopped by LBCC goalie Jorge Becerra on a breakaway attempt. Six minutes later, Flores made a difficult header attempt that Long Beach's Krans headed straight up and over the cage while standing at the goal-line.
In the 52nd minute, Irving Rosales drove a hard attempt that Becerra made a leaping save. With eight minutes left in the match, Becerra confronted Larson who again got free in the goalie box only to have Becerra put out his right hand to bat down Larson's right-footed chip. Becerra had eight saves overall.
PCC's scoring issues have resulted in an average of just one goal per game (10 goals in 10 matches). The Lancers have outshot their opponents, however, in eight of their matches.
The Lancers' defense looked strong against Long Beach thanks to sterling play by defenders Elio Anguiano and Alcaraz. Trujillo and Victor Menchaca, both midfielders, also played well on both sides of the field. PCC goalie Alex Radillo made five saves.
