News: Fourth-Quarter Rally Lifts WWP To Victory at Pasadena Bowl

The Pasadena City College women's water polo team appeared to be on its way to a sixth straight loss when it trailed 8-4 v. Southwestern College during the Lancers' second match Friday at the 12th Pasadena Bowl Tournament. But the Lancers found their offense, exploding for six goals in the fourth quarter and downing the Cougars, 10-8.

With just 1:17 left, the Lancers (3-7 overall) broke an 8-8 tie on Paloma Barrera's third goal of the game after she took a feed from Marisa Rack. Rack added an insurance goal in the final second to cap the comeback.

With sophomore Makenzie Blank a more marked player by opponents after establishing herself as the team's go-to and now all-time school leading scorer, PCC and head coach Terry Stoddard is spreading out his offense. Blank scored one goal in the team's 8-5 loss to Los Angeles Pierce earlier Friday and picked up just two goals in the Southwestern victory. Blank leads the Lancers with 38 goals in only 10 games.

In the Pierce loss, sophomore team captain Shelby Gregg put on a goalie clinic with 13 saves, including a stop on a 5-meter penalty shot and then another point-blank save on the ensuing rebound attempt. Gregg's outstanding play defending the PCC goal has allowed the Lancers to concentrate on its counter attack and offense. Gregg added 10 saves in the Southwestern triumph and has averaged an impressive 10-plus saves per game this year.

Among the players that picked up their level of play Friday was sophomore Milene Minassians, who scored twice v. Pierce and was a part of four Lancers' goals v. Southwestern (two goals and two assists). Rack, a freshman, was solid against Pierce as she made four steals and dished out two assists. Her late efforts were also huge against the Cougars in game 2. Sophomore Giselle Mendieta picked up a goal, one assist and two steals in that match.

Ashli Gonzales, who has been a key transfer and starter, was instrumental with four steals, a goal and an assist against Southwestern after recording a goal and a pair of steals against Pierce. Stoddard has looked to Gonzales as an all-around player due to her speed, passing and agressive defensive style.
