News: Defender White Goes On The Offensive In Women's Soccer Triumph

An All-South Coast Conference selection as a freshman, sophomore defender Hallie White continues to be a stalwart during the Pasadena City College women's soccer team's impressive start to 2012. White scored both of PCC's goals Friday in the Lancers' second straight shutout victory, 2-0 over Los Angeles Harbor College.

The Lancers remained undefeated in South Coast Conference games at 3-0-1 and kept their undefeated streak alive in home matches at Robinson Stadium, now 6-0-1 on the SprinTurf field. PCC is 7-2-2 overall under third-year head coach Randy Lilavois.

In the 11th minute, Cassandra Orozco made a sideline throw-in. The ball squirted loose inside the goalie box and White cashed in, rolling a shot from nine yards out for a 1-0 Lancers' lead. In the 63rd minute, White (Burroughs High) once again showed why she may have the strongest long kick ability of any player in the state when she bombed a drive from the 35-yard line that richoted off the far corner post and into the net for her second goal.

The Lancers carried the play against the Seahawks (3-6-1, 1-2-1 in SCC games), but Harbor's defense kept PCC's forwards from getting any second chances around the goal. Pasadena finished with 17 shots on goal. Zuri Moraga made eight saves for Harbor while Tatiana Sanchez picked up her second straight shutout (third of the year) only having to make three stops.

"White made some heads up plays, but the type you hope your team leaders can make for you," Lilavois said. "I'm so pleased with the entire team. The players are buying into what the coaches are telling them. We're making good plays, setting up good shots, and combinations. White got us our goals today, but we're doing so many things well right now. Our younger players understand from the sophomores how important it is to go hard on every ball."

Among the Lancers who were solid v. Harbor were defender Heather French, midfielder Orozco, defender Danielle Busta, midfielder Cassandra Saavedra, and midfielder Amanda Papac. Forward Nancy Nunez had three shots on net, including one that just missed wide on a one-timer from a cross by Busta in the 15th minute. Nunez leads the Lancers with eight goals this season.

PCC goes into the lion's den next week when it hosts state No. 10-ranked Mt. San Antonio College on Tuesday, October 9 (3 p.m.) and then travels to face top-ranked Cerritos College on Friday, October 12 (4 p.m. start).
