News: Women's Cross Country 2nd At Brubaker Invitational
Diane Lombardi's fourth place finish was one of three in the top 16 for the Lancers Friday as the Pasadena City College women's cross country team took second place at the 11-team, Brubaker Invitational at Orange's Irvine Park.
The sophomore Lombardi ran a 19:20.1 time over the 5-kilometer course and was just 15 seconds behind the individual race winner--Miriam Jimenez of Mt. San Antonio. South Coast Conference teams dominated the team placings as Mt. SAC won the meet while El Camino took fourth.
Following Lombardi's outstanding run, next in line for the Lancers was freshman Christina Shamirian in 12th place (20:05.1), then sophomore Arielle Steimer-Barragan (20:14.6) in 16th out of the 88-racer field. Freshman Tanya Hossain finished in 29th (20:58.4) while sophomore Melissa Hadloc took 47th (21:35). Frosh Kailadnni Chavez (22:41.3) ran in 67th.
PCC's local roster includes Lombardi from Crescenta Valley High, Shamirian from Burbank, and Barragan-Steimer from Gabrielino. The Lancers ran without the services of their top runner thus far in Jessica Nunez (injury).
The Lancers are rated No. 8 in the recent SoCal Rankings.
MEN PLACE 6TH AT BRUBAKER
The 4-mile Brubaker Invitational men's race turned into a confusing one as a host of runners took a wrong turn, causing some to run longer than the designed course. There were no place changes or disqualifications due to the mistake as the Pasadena City College men's team placed sixth out of 10 teams.
Freshman Francis Lee (Arcadia High) finished in 15th place for the second straight meet, again leading the pack for the Lancers. Lee's time of 22:52.4 was indicative of the incorrectly run course. Freshman Alfredo Folgar (Northview) was next up for the Lancers in 26th (23:11.1).
The rest of PCC's harriers finished as follows: sophomore Kevin Cano, 40th, 23:34; freshman Brendan Greene, 51st, 23:51; rookie Oswel Caal, 66th, 24:06; first-year Charlie Camacho, 69th, 24:20; frosh Juan De La Rosa, 72nd, 24:26; sophomore Brian Sacripanti (the team's top runner last year), 82nd, 24:35; freshman Abraham Esparza, 88th, 24:48; frosh Faustino Gil, 95th, 25:13; Chris Paidimukkala, 105th, 26:07; rookie Paul Ingram, 111th, 26:52; and recently added newcomer Jack Serna, 114th, 27:01.
San Bernardino Valley won the race and individual winner was Riverside's Luis Gutierrez at 21:48.8.
PCC is 11th in the current SoCal Rankings. Next Friday, October 12, the Pasadena cross country teams will take part in the Mt. SAC Invitational. Races begin in Walnut at 10 a.m.
