News: Football Kicker Magana Named SCFA Special Teams Player of Week

Martin Magana, the Pasadena City College football team's freshman kicker and leading scorer this season, was selected as the SCFA National Northern Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in Saturday's 49-42 loss against Allan Hancock.

Magana booted field goals of 23 and 26 yards, made all four of his extra point kicks, and averaged 60 yards on six kickoffs, including a touchback. His biggest play, however, was his perfect execution of an onside kick in the final two minutes. The kick allowed PCC to recover the ball at the Hancock 37 and resulted in a Lancers' touchdown a few plays later. Magana's extra point gave Pasadena its only lead of the game at 42-41.

After eight games this year, Magana (from Lincoln High in Los Angeles) is tied for ninth in the state in field goals made with nine in 14 attempts. He is 14-for-15 on extra point kicks and has totaled 41 points for the Lancers' scoring lead.

Magana's nine FGs is the most by a Lancer kicker since Joe Timchenko booted 11 on the 2001 Mission Conference champion squad. Going back to 1988, only Dana Barsuhn (1995) and Grant Runnerstrom ('88) kicked as many field goals as Magana (all with nine). With two games yet to be played, Magana will likely go into double digits.

The school record for most field goals in a season was set by PCC Sports Hall of Famer and former NFL kicker Mike Lansford, who kicked 15 during the Lancers' 1977 state and national championship season. Lansford did that in a 12-game season and Timchenko played 11 games in '01. Paul Gielgens connected on 14 field goals in a 10-game, 1981 season.

Magana (6-foot-1, 175 pounds) is only the second PCC player to receive POY honors after punter Manny Meza earned a special teams nod earlier this season. Meza had a big game v. Hancock as well with three punts for a 54.7 yards average, including a 60-yarder and one that was downed inside the 20.

"We call them the M&Ms and one thing I haven't had to worry much about during this year is our kicking game," said PCC head coach Fred Fimbres. "Martin is a special player, who should be touted the hero of a victory against Hancock, but we didn't do our jobs to stop their kick returner at the end of the game. You can't practice a better onside kick than the one he delivered in the clutch on Saturday. He deserves all the praise he gets."
