News: Callen Hits Near-Perfect Match; Volleyball Sweeps Trade Tech

Sophomore middle blocker Megan Callen's performance Wednesday had head coach Tammy Silva and Pasadena City College sports information researching through old stat boxes. Callen slammed 12 kills in just 13 attempts in a near-perfect hitting match for the Lancer during PCC's sweep at Los Angeles Trade Tech, 25-7, 25-5, 25-22.

Callen's .923 hitting percentage is believed to be the highest single-match percentage ever by a PCC player recording 10 or more kills. Callen's only non-kill attempt was dug out by Trade Tech's defense.

"I've never seen anything like it," Silva said. "You see players on fire during matches, but to put down every attempt for a kill is just ridiculous. Megan has been really improving her swing over the last month, and she almost perfected it last night. I don't even remember the attempt that didn't go for a point. She was murdering the ball."

A 6-foot-1 talent from St. Lucy's Priory in Glendora, Callen (pictured) added two solo blocks and three digs as the Lancers hit .479 overall as a team.

Pasadena, ranked No. 9 in the state, leads the South Coast Conference with a perfect 8-0 record and a 14-3 overall mark. The Lancers are looking for their first conference title since 2009.

Against Trade Tech, Silva said she was disappointed by her reserves in the third set after mostly her starting unit allowed the Lady Techsters just 12 points combined in the first two sets.

PCC continued its strong serving presence with nine aces, including three by setter Lindsey Kuramoto (13 assists) and two by defensive specialist Cassandra Delacruz (eight digs). Sophomore starting middle blocker Jackie Valle-Acosta added eight kills and three blocks while libero Jennifer Estrada contributed 11 digs and two kills. Frosh outside hitter Nora To'omalatai added five kills, six digs and an ace in just one set of play.

The Lancers next host East Los Angeles College on Friday, October 26. First serve is 6 p.m. at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
