News: Softball Sweeps Doubleheader With Pair of Shutouts
The Pasadena City College softball team couldn't have asked for a better home-opening afternoon Thursday. The Lancers not only swept their non-conference doubleheader v. Bartsow, but blanked the Vikings in both ends, 8-0 in six innings in game 1, and a 7-0 shutout in game 2.
PCC received stellar pitching from starting pitchers Melissa Izumida and Cierra Newton. Izumida hurled a 2-hitter, striking out 10 batters and walking none in the opener in a 6-inning contest. The Lancers banged out 13 hits as the game ended due to the 8-run mercy rule in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch that plated the eighth run.
The Lancers are 3-4 overall while Barstow is still looking for its first win at 0-5.
Newton then became the first Lancer hurler in four years to twirl a complete 7-inning shutout as she allowed just four hits, walked one and struck out five to cap the doubleheader win. Newton's performance was last matched in a PCC jersey by Amber Frame on Feb. 19, 2009 when she tossed a 4-hitter in a 7-inning blanking of Chaffey College. Newton was the beneficiary of a 16-hit Lancers attack.
"This was a big day for our pitchers to build their confidence," said PCC second-year head coach Brittany Williams. "Both threw strikes and kept the pace of the games quick. Our hitters started slow I think in both games, but then we really started to knock the ball around later in each game. Our defense is making plays and that's a big change from last season. It was just a great day for us all around."
In the opener, left-handed hitting and throwing catcher Jazmin Hernandez batted 4-for-4 with a booming double off the right-field fence in the second inning. In the second game, it was second baseman Audrey Serna's turn to go perfect, also a 4-for-4 hitting game (two runs scored), including a double. Serna finished the day with six hits while Hernandez totaled five.
Also in game 2, left-handed batting first baseman Natalie Ficocelli, the team's lone letterman from 2012, was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI. Leftfielder Ashley Shaneberger (returner from 2011), third baseman Sara Quintero, and Newton all added 2-hit efforts.
In a 6-4 loss at Antelope Valley College on Wednesday, third baseman Katelyn Thordarsen belted a grand slam in the fifth inning for the Lancers' offense. Thordarsen added a double.
PCC visits Citrus College Friday, Feb. 1 in a 2 p.m. non-conference tilt.
