News: Softball Keeps Home Victory Streak Alive At 6 Games

The Pasadena City College softball team continued its run of success at Robinson Park Thursday with a 12-2, South Coast Conference victory over El Camino College-Compton Center. The Lancers are 6-0 in home games this season, outscoring opponents by a 43-6 count.

The Lancers, 7-6 overall, have now won by the 8-run mercy rule five times this year, four of those at their off-campus home diamond off of Fair Oaks Avenue. PCC iimproved to 1-1 in conference play while the Tartars are 1-4 and 0-2.

PCC scored two runs in the first inning, six more in the second, and four in the fourth.

Shortstop Katelynn Thordarson batted 3-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored to lead a 10-hit Lancers attack. Catcher Allison Lacey was 2-for-3 with two RBI while first baseman Natalie Ficocelli hit 1-for-2 with two RBI. Designated player Melissa Izumida drew three of the team's eight walks against Compton pitchers, including twice on bases-loaded situations for two more RBI.

Winning pitcher Cierra Newton ran her record to 4-4 by throwing the complete-game, five innings, scattering eight hits and allowing just one earned run. She received stellar defense as centerfielder Jazmin Hernandez robbed Compton's Elizabeth Morales of a possible home run as Hernandez ran full force and caught her drive over the shoulder, bowling over the auxilary fence in straight-away center field.

PCC will play a make-up game on Monday, Feb. 18 as it hosts Chaffey College at 12 noon. The game was originally supposed to be played at Chaffey, but was rained out on Feb. 8.
