News: Hutto-Patterson Playoff Win Streak, Season Ends For Women's Hoops

For the first time since Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium opened its doors at Pasadena City College in 1999-2000, the Lancers women's basketball team lost a home playoff game as No. 11 seed Irvine Valley College upset the No. 6 seed PCC, 66-53, Saturday night. It was a Round 2 game of the Southern California Regional Playoffs.

PCC had won all 18 of its home playoff games at the HP Gym under 17-year head coach Joe Peron.

The Lasers (21-10) led 11-2, 24-16, and went into halftime ahead, 29-22. The Lancers (22-7) never led and were tied once at 11-11 early in the first half. With eight minutes left, PCC got to within three, 44-41, on a Shay Jackson layup.

IVC responded with the fifth 3-pointer of the game by reserve guard Dominique Santos for a 49-41 advantage with 6:15 left. Irvine Valley was led by Santos with 18 points and Amber Wharton, who scored 16 points and made eight straight free throws (9-for-12 overall) down the stretch. Wharton also dished out eight assists.

For Pasadena, Jackson, an All-State Second Team selection, scored 17 points, passed out six assists and had five rebounds in her final Lancer game. Frosh center Kaitlyn Parks added 16 points and 10 rebounds while Desiree Loving scored nine points off the bench. Stella Ghazarian, the star of last year's amazing comeback playoff win by PCC over Antelope Valley, went 0-for-4 from the floor and was held scoreless.

PCC had not lost a home playoff game since 1999 when Santa Barbara City College defeated the Lancers, 71-65, in a third round playoff at Occidental College. The last time PCC lost a postseason game on campus was in 1998 when Fullerton defeated the Lancers, 77-71, in the old women's gym located next to the PCC Aquatic Center.

Irvine Valley dominated the boards, outrebounding PCC, 45-30, including 29-12 in the first half. The Lasers snapped a nine-game losing streak to Pasadena since Peron started running the Lancers program in 1996-97.

WOMEN'S CAGER NOTES: ln opening playoff games, Peron had never lost home or road in his coaching career (previously 15-0) prior to this defeat...Despite not scoring, Ghazarian finished her PCC career with 650 points, good enough to place 22nd on the all-time PCC scoring list...Peron's all-time playoff record dropped to 31-15...Besides Jackson and Ghazarian, guards Sabrina Martinez, Kahlia Theus and Angeline Jefferson all saw their PCC careers come to an end.
