News: Men's Swimmer Stephen To Setting To Build On Last Year's State Title

Pasadena City College men's sophomore swimmer Stephen To, the defending state champion in the 200-yard butterfly, opened the South Coast Conference dual meet season by winning that event at a PCC-hosted double dual against Mt. San Antonio and Chaffey Colleges held March 1.

To (pronounced "toe") swam 2:00.24, a slow mark for him, but enough to beat second-place swimmer Thomas Harper of Chaffey (2:01.38). To swam 1:50.12 at last year's CCCAA State Championships when he won the title in the 200 fly as an underdog.

Mt. San Antonio defeated the Lancers, 201-70 and Chaffey also handed PCC a 180-89 setback in the team scoring. Mt. SAC overwhelmed Chaffey, 168-113.

In the 200 freestyle, To took second at 1:48.57, but that mark was only .25 of a second off the time he swam at the SCC Finals last year. That's a good sign for To, whose times will only get better as the season progresses. Chaffey's Kyle McCurley edged out To at 1:48.10.

Michael Chiodo recorded PCC's other event win in the 200-backstroke with a time of 2:09.30. Chiodo beat out Mt. SAC's Michael Joven to the wall at 2:09.97. Chiodo was second in the 100-backstroke (58.19) and third in the 200 individual medley (2:10.97).  In the 200 medley relay, the Lancers placed second on the swimming of Chiodo, John Darrin Smith, To, and Tanick Nitinthorn (1:43.87).

Christopher Anderson continues his improvement in the 1- and 3-meter diving as he scored 151.75 points for third place. Smith placed fourth in the 100-freestyle (52.44) and fifth in the 50-freestyle (23.73).

The PCC men's swimming and diving team will next be in action on March 8-9 at the Chaffey Invitational.
