News: Softball Powers Way To 11-6 Win At Harbor
First baseman Sara Quintero snapped a 5-5 tie in the top of the seventh inning, blasting a 3-run homer as the Pasadena City College softball team downed host Los Angeles Harbor, 11-6, Tuesday in a South Coast Conference game. While the team has won at neutral tournament sites, it was the first time in seven 2013 games that PCC won a game on the road.
Quintero's bomb was part of a 6-run final inning for the Lancers, who are 11-13 overall and 3-4 in conference play. Rightfielder Marilyn Ayala later hit a 2-RBI triple in that final rally. Third baseman Katelyn Thordarson had a banner day for PCC, batting 4-for-4 with a 2-run homer and two doubles (nine total bases). Thordarson (pictured) and Quintero each have reached the 20 RBI mark after 24 games.
Quintero went 2-for-3 with four RBI while lefty catcher Jazmin Hernandez drew three walks and scored three runs. Designated player Porchia Jackson added two stolen bases and second baseman Emily Cuiriz, playing for leading hitter Audrey Serna (out for personal reasons), singled in a run in the first inning when PCC took a 3-0 lead.
PCC head coach Brittany Williams reported that regular centerfielder Ashley Shaneberger may be out for an extended period due to injury.
"We played without three of our best starters and fought the adversity to win," Williams said. "We got big swings from Sara and Katelyn. Right now, our team is playing as well as I can ask for a squad that is virtually all freshmen."
It was the fifth time this season that the Lancers scored 10 or more runs (5-0 in those contests).
Lancers' ace pitcher Melissa Izumida struck out a season-high 11 batters and picked up her seventh pitching win. Izumida has 92 strikeouts in 89 innings this season. It was also Izumida's 10th complete game.
For Harbor (7-10, 1-6 in SCC play), second baseman Tara Stout batted 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI.
The Lancers host East Los Angeles Thursday, March 7 in a 2 p.m. game at Robinson Park. The Lancers are 7-1 on their home diamond this season.
