News: Women's Swim Continues Impressive Marks, Records
The freshmen trio of Emily Frederick, Arolyn Basham, and Shannon Cheung along with sophomore Paige Watroba continued their relentless assault on the Pasadena City College women's swimming record book with their performances March 8-9 at the Chaffey Invitational.
The Lancers set new school records in the 200-yard freestyle relay and 800 freestyle relay on Friday. The 800 relay time of 8:15.46 smashed the old 2003 mark by 8.5 seconds and gave PCC a win in that event at the Riverside City College pool. Earlier that day in pouring rain, the four Lancers placed second in the 200 relay, but with a new PCC standard of 1:44.10. That also erased a 2003 record set at 1:44.47.
Frederick picked up her sixth individual PCC record by winning the 50-freestyle in 24.98 seconds. The mark broke a 2-year-old record set in 2011 by Mikela Velasquez (25.01).
Frederick won her third solo event at the Chaffey Invitational on Saturday in taking first place in the 200 individual medley (2:14.92). She just missed a fourth win, settling for second in the 100-butterfly at 1:00.85.
Cheung won the 100-freestyle with a a strong swim at 55.42 seconds and she was second in the 50-butterfly at 28.70. Basham captured a win in the 50-breaststroke (32.89 seconds) and took second in the 50-breaststroke. Basham placed second in the 100-breaststroke (1:11.42).
PCC finished in fifth place with 397 points scored.
The team has broken 11 school records thus far, including nine participated in by Fredericks.
The Lancers return to South Coast Conference action this Friday, March 15 in a double dual meet against East Los Angeles and El Camino Colleges in Torrance.
