News: Lancer Sprinter Christian White Seizes Moment At Pasadena Games

Pasadena City College men's track and field sprinter Christian White picked the perfect time for his best race of the season Saturday. White, a freshman from Laurel High in Maryland, put on his best impression of the "Roadrunner," and posted the state's best mark this year in the 400 meters, a 47.44 seconds time at the 70th Pasadena Games held at Robinson Stadium.

White finished second to only former California state prep champion Shaquille Howard, who now runs for Academy of Art University (in San Francisco). Howard ran a 46.56. White also beat out PCC teammate Chineek Favors, who took sixth in 48.90.

White also helped PCC to its only event win of the home meet as he opened the 4x400 relay that hit the wire in 3:16.84. Tywon White (no relation to Christian), Kameron Burch (from Pasadena High), and at anchor Favors completed the victory. It was not the Lancers' best mark in the relay as they performed a 3:14.94 (state second best at the Cal State Northridge Invitional on March 16).

Another Lancer to enter the state elite was high jumper Steven Williams, a sophomore from Downey High. Williams finished second in the event and tied the state's top leap of the year at 6-feet, 8.75 inches. Williams matched the mark of Cerritos College's Dionbrea Norris as the two will likely get a chance to go head to head at the South Coast Conference Championships in late April.

Williams could ultimately join a talented list of PCC high jumpers who have gone on to state titles. Since 1972, five Lancers have won the state title, the last being Chris Hicks in 2008 with a mark of 6-11.

Thrower Caleb Wood placed second in the javelin with a season-best toss of 171-9 (17th in the state). Fharhaad Zinnamon finished third in the triple jump (44-8.5), but well under his best throw of 47-1 at an earlier meet, which is sixth in the state.

PCC ran its best time of the year in the 4x100 relay that finished fourth in 41.81 seconds. That mark is No. 8 currently in the state behind the racing of Derrick Shepherd (Marshall Fundamental), Favors, Vivaswan Shetty and John Lee.

In the 110 hurdles, Te'von Mitchell took fifth at 15.03 seconds, seventh fastest in the state. Mitchell was seventh in the 400 hurdles (55.81), an event where three other Lancers raced well in Shian Hale (56.53, 10th), Khaleel Green (56.80, 11th), and Kymoni Bellamy (56.83, 12th).

In the 4x1,600 relay, PCC was third at 18:57.56 on the middle distance running of Kevin Cano (Montebello High), Francis Lee (Arcadia), Faustino Gil, and Abraham Esparza (Rosemead).

Shepherd raced to seventh in the 200 meters (22.22) while Shetty was 10th (22.28). Shepherd raced an 11.02 in the 100 dash, 20th at the meet. Alex Tapia took sixth in the shot put (12.27 meters) while Wood was fifth in the discus (43.55 meters).

"We put two athletes at the top of the state mark list, and did it in front of the home crowd on our home track," said PCC head coach Larry Wade. "The Pasadena Games is for everybody, and has been traditionally a great meet for the high school competition. But now we feel the colleges, in particular our athletes, can aspire to do great things at the event. I'm hoping we can attract more community colleges in the future."
