News: Badminton Continues SCC Dominance

Ringing up its 41st consecutive South Coast Conference victory Friday, the Pasadena City College women's badminton team is at the halfway mark of what will likely be its fifth straight conference championship season. The Lancers wiped out El Camino, 19-2, at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.

The Lancers have recovered from their 0-2 non-conference start to move their record to 6-2 and a perfect 6-0 in SCC matches. Defending CCCAA state singles champion Angie Ortiz led the charge v. El Camino as she recorded two sweeps and two doubles sweeps with No. 1 team partner Alyssa Boyt. ECC's No. 1 player Corinne Belendres tried to keep up with Ortiz, but went down to the Lancer wizard, 21-8, 21-17.

Other Lancers who had a perfect afternoon were Boyt, who picked up two singles wins at PCC's No. 4 ladder,  No. 5 player Alejandra Palacios, who went 2-0 in singles and teamed with Grace Espinoza for two doubles' triumphs at the No. 2 pair slot, and No. 3 performer Shaghig Avedisian, who was 2-0 in singles and coupled with Sophia Njomin to win the lone No. 3 doubles match.

Espinoza (No. 2) and No. 6 Grace Park each were 1-1 in singles.

"We're working on what will be our best pairings in doubles while getting a better handle on what will be our set singles ladder," said PCC head coach Bill Sanchez. "The healthy competition comes from our practices, and then the players have to earn their spots during matches. This is one reason why we've been successful for so many years. The players are hungry and not complacent."
