News: PCC Alumnus Jerry Tarkanian Named To Basketball Hall of Fame

Jerry Tarkanian, a Pasadena City College alumnus and head coach of the Lancers' 1967 state champion men's basketball team, was named as part of the 2013 class of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Monday.

The announcement was made prior to the NCAA championship game in Atlanta. Among the 12-person class, Tarkanian joins Louisville coach Rick Pitino and former NBA All-Stars Bernard King and Gary Payton. The official induction ceremony will take place on Sept. 8 at the home of the Hall in Springfield, Mass.

Tarkanian played at PCC (1950-51) and went on to coach here for two seasons from 1966-68. In his two years, the program went 66-4 as he coached the '67 state champion and the '68 state runner-up. He went on to a highly successful career head coaching at the NCAA Division I level, including directing the University of Nevada-Las Vegas (UNLV) to the 1990 national championship.

Tarkanian, 82, who also had coaching tenures at Long Beach State and Fresno State, guided his teams to four Final Four appearances. His .784 winning percentage is fourth in Division I history. Nicknamed "Tark the Shark," Tarkanian ran teams that were known for their up-tempo style and he was an advocate of recruiting community college transfers well before it became commonplace.

In 1999, Tarkanian was named as part of PCC's "Distinguished Alumni" during the college's 75th anniversary.
