News: Badminton Rebounds With 19-2 Win Over ECC
Stinging a bit from the end of the program's 41-match, South Coast Conference winning streak, the Pasadena City College women's badminton team put away their disappointment in knocking of host El Camino College, 19-2, Wednesday.
The Lancers (7-3 overall, 7-1 and in first place of the SCC) received two singles victories each from No. 1 player Angie Ortiz and No. 6 Serena Yan. The Lancers' No. 2 Shag Avedisian split her matches as did No. 5 Sophia Njomin while No. 3 Alyssa Boyt and No. 4 Alejandra Palacios each won their only match and received forfeits with El Camino a player down on the ladder.
In doubles, The PCC No. 1 team of Ortiz-Boyt, both sophomores, swept their two matches. The No. 2 unit of Palacios-Avedisian also won their two matches.
Ortiz, the defending CCCAA state singles champion, was pushed by El Camino's No. 1 Corinne Belandres, but outlasted her in three sets, 21-18, 16-21, 21-19. Njomin needed the three-set route to win v. the Warriors' No. 5 Bryar Cochran, 20-22, 21-19, 21-19.
The Lancers can clinch their fifth consecutive SCC crown on Friday, April 19 when they visit East Los Angeles College in a 2 p.m. match. ELAC can clinch a tie for the title with PCC if it wins. The Huskies downed the Lancers, 13-8, on April 10 at PCC.
